torrential rain

Flooding has cut off the Bruce Highway and forced the closure of more than 50 roads throughout the region.

Torrential rain and flash flooding are expected to continue across southeast Queensland over the next few days.

Heavy downpours have already caused flooding and road closures in some districts and high winds have brought down powerlines across the region causing black-outs overnight.

The bureau's Jeff Perkins says flash flooding will be a danger for the rest of the week.

Areas between Maroochydore and Redcliffe received the highest falls of up to 150mm in 12 hours.

Strong winds have brought down powerlines across southeast Queensland - Energex says about 8,000 homes and businesses were blacked out overnight and this morning - most now have power back on but more blackouts are expected as the wild weather persists.

Mike Shapland from Emergency Management Queensland says crews were called to eight cars stuck in water.

So much for sunny Queensland...
