Today is Saturday (as you may well know.) It was sunny for the first time in a long time and almost balmy (for Canada anyway.) After having a lovely sleep-in until 10am and a long hot shower, Ayla and I started throwing some ideas around for what we should do for today...so many possibilities! A whole day of blank to be filled! She felt like doing something active like snowshoeing, iceskating; even the capilano suspension bridge was mentioned. In the end I had to go to get my tax done so off to Brentwood mall we went. After tax & discovering that I could not book my $77 flight with flight centre without avoiding a additional $50 fee, we then departed.
Not knowing where we were going to end up we drove past 'Aunt Leah's Thrift Store' and immediately did a u-turn...it looked so good, not picked over or tainted by the masses. Such treasures! We found some old suitcases in perfect nick, one of which I picked up for $2. Ayla found this awesome retro looking vinyl bag and also a leather bag with some sweet decal carvings on it. Other items found: a 'cast-a-party' game for organising your own soap opera night, cute ladies gloves that had such tiny delicate fingers, an old radio with flip numbers, a velvet rust coloured barstool and a old-skool reusable cloth bag.

We then drove out towards UBC to see all the fancy houses in the small flash of driveway space as we sped past. We basically travelled around the coastline and I saw, for the first time, one of Vancouver's 'best beaches.' Spanish Beach, I believe it was called. At first glance I thought it was mud flats. We then jumped out of the car and took some photos of downtown and the seaside and featured ourselves in such time shots as the one above...

Next we walked up West 4th Ave and came across this cute little frenchie place with entirely black and white stuff where we met a very friendly young woman who referred us to our next stop: My Favourite Thrift Store. This shop is a whole new level of cool. You actually have to dig to find stuff, there's just so many things under and behind other things...

The owner/manager was this awesome young lady who gave away 'mystery' cd's with every purchase. She also personally selected a James Brown Cd for me, even though I didn't buy anything and as we were leaving gave us a mini water pistol each! We felt so loved!
Our next stop: Granville Island.
The theme for the day, it seemed, was that we kept meeting really happy, fun people. Maybe it was that we were dressed in so many fun, happy colours, maybe it was that we both looked a little like hippies or maybe everyone was just glad that it's finally stopped raining. This theme was continued when we went into a hammock store and the guy there was like: "come! lie back in this hammock! kick your heels up! relax!" He wanted to talk to us and tell all about the different styles of hammocks and why this one is better and how big the family size one is...well you get the idea. We left feeling like everything was sunshine and happiness!

I found my mecca! A shop full to the brim with hats! Old hats, new hats, classic hats, train hats, rain hats, warm hats, newsboy caps, fedoras, cowboy hats, floopy hats, lacy hats, sun hats, felt hats, linen caps and even a zorro hat! I was amazed!

And so ends the day now with a little quiet reading, snuggling up in blankets with hot water bottles and some fairly extensive blog posting!
